Senate Passes Law Hoping To Ban Internet Fake IDs
Boston, Massachusetts

(U-WIRE) BOSTON — A federal measure seeking to curb fake identification distribution via the Internet passed unanimously in the Senate and is pending in the House of Representatives.

While fake IDs are themselves illegal, the bill would make it illegal to create software used to make the IDs and toughens laws on selling fake IDs on the Web.

But according to a number of Boston University students, the legislation will do little to curtail what is already a widespread and pervasive practice. A significant number of students interviewed admitted to owning fake IDs.

"I don't think that (buying fake IDs over the Internet) is a very good idea because it's not a very reliable way to go about it. I wouldn't trust it," said Kim Ray, a sophomore in the College of General Studies.

"I got one much easier through one of my friends," she added.

A number of students said although they have owned fake IDs at some point, they shouldn't be accessible over the Internet.

With the advent of the Internet, illegal-minded teens no longer have to use the old know-a-guy-who-knows-a-guy methods to acquire fake identification for buying cigarettes, liquor or lottery tickets, or to use to get into nightclubs.

And they're using them - or trying to - plenty.

Not only is it easier for underage people to use the technology to create their own fake IDs, but an entire fake-ID industry has sprung up on the Web as well. According to a May 20 Associated Press article, some law enforcement officials are saying that the new and growing Internet phenomenon accounts for about 30 percent of all fake ID documents in this country.

Technology Making It Easier to Obtain Fake ID's

Fake ID's purchased on the Internet are becoming a bigger problem for law enforcement. They say with technology moving at such a fast pace, it's hard to keep up... giving kids and others the opportunity to fake their identity.

Twenty years ago, a fake ID could get you into a club and helped you buy alcohol. But for kids today, it's an entirely different story.

"In the year 2003... they're getting these phony ID's for multiple purposes for obtaining services under false pretenses for obtaining money under false pretenses for going to places they shouldn't go." Sgt. Ed Kravetz of Metro's Fraud Detail has seen what's available for kids to make fake ID's. "It's taken on a whole new twist." "There are certainly a lot of websites where people can obtain fraudulent identification."

Fake ID Ring Cracked
A huge operation believed responsible for producing counterfeit driver's license that were distributed in California, 40 others states and the District of Columbia, has been broken up, says California Attorney General Bill Lockyer. The investigation is believed to be among the largest involving driver's license fraud in state history.

"These fake IDs predominantly were used by underage college students who wanted to get into bars and buy alcohol," Mr. Lockyer says. "This sophisticated operation, which provided the tools to manufacture fake driver's licenses throughout the county, not only contributed to the widespread problem of underage drinking. During these times of increased concern about financial privacy, ID theft and terrorism, this ring greatly enhanced the opportunity for criminals to establish fake identifications to commit fraud and acts of terrorism."
