Fake ID's are Contributing to More Than 1400 Deaths
Driver charged with homicide in girl's death - Teenaged motorist was drunk and lacked a license, police say. Carper said she had used a fake ID to get into the bar in the past. However, she hadn't used it recently because the bar staff recognized her and assumed she was 21, she said. Police said they checked the women for fake ID's after their arrest. Police found Iowa licenses on the women but no other identification cards; they said the women had used fake ID's on previous visits to the bar. |

TA3 is dedicated to exposing marketers of false identification on the Internet and enlightening todays youth of the consequences of underage drinking. TA3 has been a major contributor in working to close down numerous websites whose primary focus is capitalizing on the marketing of false identification to minors seeking to purchase alcohol.
Underage drinking accounts for the death of over 1400 college students being killed annually. Not just in automobile accidents, in acts of violence as well as over 600,000 college students who have been drinking assault students each year. In addition there are over 70,000 cases of sexual assault and date rape reported each year where drinking was involved.
TA3 feels that the ease in which false identifications may be obtained is a major contributor to facilitating todays youth in acquiring alcohol. A recent profile by MSNBC confirmed the ease in which kids are able to obtain fake IDs on the Internet and warn "make sure you know what your kids are doing on the computer."
The fake ID industry is not just a local issue due to the advent of the internet as Sgt. Ed Kravetz of Las Vegas, Nevada's Fraud Detail related: "It's taken on a whole new twist." There are certainly a lot of websites where people can obtain fraudulent identification. With a few clicks of the mouse, we were able to give a name and a picture. In return false identification the site said was for entertainment purposes only."

Internet bolsters fake ID business
But the Senate is fighting the trend. With the advent of the Internet, illegal-minded teens no longer have to use the old know-a-guy-who-knows-a-guy methods to acquire fake identification for buying cigarettes, liquor or lottery tickets, or to use to get into nightclubs.
Nino Ramirez, a retired law enforcement officer who is now director of safety
and security for ABC Fine Wine and Spirits (previously ABC Liquor), has had
extensive experience dealing with the problem of fake IDs.
"With today's quality printers and computer technology, it's very easy to duplicate out-of-state and in-state IDs," he said.
With today's technology its harder for youth to create their own fake IDs, unfortunately with the readiness of the Internet, it has allowed an entire fake ID industry to spring up on the Web. According to a May 20 Associated Press article, some law enforcement officials are saying that the new and growing Internet phenomenon accounts for about 30 percent of all fake ID documents in this country.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) is heading up an effort to squash this situation. She sponsored Senate Bill 2924 - the Internet Identification Prevention Act of 2000, passed by the Senate on Oct. 31 - which, if passed into law, would criminalize the use of computer equipment and the Internet to create false identification documents.
It would also outlaw the practice of "producing false identification
containing easily removable disclaimers," which, Collins told Newsbytes.com,
currently allow ID thieves to escape prosecution.
Many fakes online
Lots of fake IDs, such as passports, Social Security cards, birth
certificates, driver's licenses, college diplomas, press credentials and even
IDs for police officers and FBI agents are available online.
Authorities have tried to deter these fakes with additions such as magnetic strips and holograms. But Ramirez and Doerflein agree that the technology available is good enough to fool experts.
